Sports Injuries
The forces exerted on the body during many types of sporting activity may easily cause damage to joints and the structures surrounding joints (the ligaments and muscles).
This type of injury may happen at any time but often occurs when the muscles are over contracted.
Osteopathic treatment can help at all stages of the recovery process. In the initial stages, it is important to reduce the inflammation (cold packs are helpful) and encourage blood supply to the area (hot packs are helpful for this). If necessary the osteopath will strap the joint to support it.
Subsequent treatment will be focussed on ensuring that while the injury heals, restrictions and contracted muscles elsewhere in the body are released. This removes as much of the burden as possible from the site of the injury allowing optimum recovery.
Advice on stretching and exercise is very important and will be given when appropriate.
